This Assignment is a process journal exercise
where students compare two portraits of their choosing.

Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the art form in original or displaced contexts.

Direction:

  1. You will select two portraits one from (Ancient Art to Age of Discovery) and another one from (Industrial revolution to contemporary art).

  2. On a google doc (template provided by Ms.Shin), you will research and present the following:

    1. Explanation of context for each piece,

    2. a compare and contrast of their styles (elements and principles),

    3. your opinion.

  3. In your sketchbook, include the printed images and/or your drawings of the portrait. (Optional)

  4. You must also include a MLA style bibliography to accompany your research.


1. Select two portraits

One from (Ancient Art to Age of Discovery)
Ancient Egypt, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Middle Ages, Gothic Art, Renaissance (Italian, Northern, Spanish), Baroque, French Academy, Neoclassicism,

Another one from (Industrial revolution to contemporary art)
Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Futurism, Cubism, Surrealism, Pop Art, Photorealism, Conceptual art, etc.

2. On a Google Doc …

Research the followings…

1) Art historical description & context for each portraits.

- Basic description of the artwork (artist, date, movement, materials, etc.)
- Explanation of the art historical context or the reason it was created.

Consider…
What are the cultural, social, political, historical, and personal circumstances under which this artwork was created? What were the artist’s intentions? What is its purpose? 

2) Comparison of style (Elements and Principles)

- Description of 2-3 similarities between the two portraits. 
- Description of 2-3 differences between the two portraits.

Consider…
Compare and contrast the elements: line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. 
Compare and contrast the principles: balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity. 

3) Beauty Opinion

In your opinion, which of these two portraits is more beautiful, and why?

Give 2-3 justifications as to why you chose this portrait as being more beautiful.   


3. In your sketchbook… (Optional)

Included printed image and/or drawings of two portraits. Notes are optional, however, visually study two portraits by drawing certain parts of the portrait.
